The difference:
IP phones are great, especially as business phones! They offer much more than the traditional way most businesses use, analog. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone systems are better because they only require one connection point or network to operate on. With analog, you need several cables and a network (in addition to the IP network) for data. An IP phone can be moved all around the home or office and they will still pick up the configuration data. IP phones also retain any extensions as soon as they are installed while analog phones will only carry one extension and are not retained.
How it works:
VoIP phone systems work by breaking the voice signals received in small data packets which are transmitted over the internet. VoIP technology uses a PSN (Packet Switching Network) technology where packets are marked and transmitted in a sequential manner so that the original voice signal can be generated at the receiving end.
Analog phone systems are what we think of traditional phones which work by converting the voice signals into electronic waves of varying frequency and amplitude. This telephone exchange collects and directs it at the receiving end. This phone system uses a CSN (Circuit Switching Network) in which analog signals travel through cables to provide point to point connectivity and establish communication.
