We previously had an Odoo app spotlight on the Documents app, which you can read here. However, while that spotlight covered many of the benefits of the Documents app, we did not go into depth on some of its standout features. So today, we're zooming in on one of the Documents app's best tools for data management: the Spreadsheet module.
More Than Just File Storage
Of course, you can upload spreadsheet files to the Documents app, but with the Spreadsheet module, you can also edit them directly in Odoo or create new ones from scratch. When creating new spreadsheets, you can build custom templates to use as a starting point instead of beginning with a blank sheet.
Since this is a module within Odoo's ecosystem, it connects to other Odoo apps, allowing you to pull data directly from them and organize it in your spreadsheets. Data pulled from other apps has the ability to update itself automatically as the source data changes, helping keep your spreadsheets current. This data can even be a navigable link directly to its source if users want to see it in its original context.
All the Features You Expect (and Then Some)
The Spreadsheet module doesn't lack any of the features you would expect from more well-known spreadsheet programs. There is support for creating formulas and many prebuilt functions to help users manage their data. Filters are available to make finding specific data easier, but there are also global filters that can be applied to spreadsheets pulling data from other Odoo apps. These global filters are applied to the data before it is loaded into the spreadsheet. When you want to enhance the presentation of your data, there is support for conditional formatting as well as chart creation.
Real-Time Collaboration: Work Together, Not in Silos
Another excellent feature of the Spreadsheet module is its real-time collaboration functionality. Spreadsheets can have multiple editors working on them at the same time, or can be shared with limited access to users who need to see the file but not change the data. To further facilitate collaboration, the module includes Chatter threads on spreadsheets and the ability to leave comments on individual cells.
