Why should your website be mobile friendly?
Matthew Almendinger

If you are a business owner or someone in charge of the company web presence, you have probably heard about websites being mobile responsive. In fact, that is a question you may have asked others. You also may have heard how important it is, but how necessary is it actually? After all, everyone can already access your website from a phone, so why bother with all the extra work just to make some minor changes for phone users? Well first off, when someone is viewing it on a phone screen instead of a monitor, everything will be shrunk down to an unreadable size. There are also a lot more people looking at your site from a phone screen than you may think.

The statistics

According to data from Statista as of November 2018, 38.67% of all the internet traffic in North America was from mobile devices. This percentage is even greater when talking about all the world's internet traffic of which 48.2% was coming from mobile devices. In addition globally out of all the website traffic in 2018 52.2% was from mobile devices. The global mobile data traffic for 2018 ended up at 19.01 exabytes which is 19,010,000 terabytes and an increase from 2017's 11.51 exabytes. This number is expected to rise to 77.49 exabytes by 2022. What all that means is that more people are viewing the internet (and your webpage) with their phones, so its important that you consider that when trying to build the best experience for your customers. According to Adobe, 8 out of 10 people will stop engaging with content if it is not well displayed.

A website with mobile responsive behavior greatly increases it's search engine optimization.

Make your website mobile friendly

Now that you are an expert, you probably want to make sure that your website is mobile responsive. You do not want to be losing potential customers. To understand how, we are going to need to get a bit more technical. Websites are primarily made of two things: HTML which controls what is displayed, and CSS which controls how things are displayed. What you want is for your CSS to have the responsiveness needed so that when your website is being displayed under certain predetermined screen sizes, the layout changes. This should change the layout into something that is easier to interact with on mobile. The hamburger navigation is a great example of this user interface change. Some phones now have such great pixel density, that browsers mistake them for desktop displays. This has made some websites break even with mobile changes made. It just goes to show that technology is an ever changing beast. So now, what if you want to make sure you have a good mobile website that is up-to-date, but are not confident in your ability to create it, do not worry as Lighthouse IT Solutions can do it for you.
