During NCSAM, we are focused on providing helpful information as to how you can stay cyber-safe. And one very elementary step in proper cybersecurity that many overlook is updating your software. Hackers and cybercriminals are always looking for new software vulnerabilities that can be exploited to gain access to networks and data. Whenever a new vulnerability is discovered, developers will work to fix it and then push out that fix to keep everyone protected, thwarting that exploit. But until the user downloads that update, their software is still vulnerable and open to being compromised.
A lot of software offers the option to enable automatic updates so that they will install new patches as soon as they become available. It can help if you always allow this when available. The less time spent without updating, the better, so being able to start the update as soon as possible ensures the minimum amount of time spent being vulnerable.
Does that really mean all software? Yes, all your software should be updated regularly, from larger ones such as your operating system and web browsers to even simple apps on your phone. You can never know where a foothold may be that a hacker can exploit. Monitoring for security updates is also a good way of identifying potentially dangerous apps. If you have or are looking to download an app that seems somewhat suspicious, check its update history; if it does not have many security updates or no update history at all, then it is more likely to be a security risk.
Much of this may seem trivial, but most security breaches occur due to minor slip-ups that give hackers the necessary vulnerability. Every aspect of cybersecurity is vital to the whole.
We highly recommend you get our Cybersecurity Essentials for Business Owners to understand the state of cybersecurity in today's climate.
