Technology is becoming more accessible every day.
Our children have grown quite accustom to using gadgets that grant them access to the internet. Most parents may feel this is not a significant concept and that a simple talk would be enough for their children to make good choices online, but that may not always be the case. In fact, how often do you check how they are using their device(s)? How often do you research the sites they visit or the apps that they use? For example; my teenage daughter has a Facebook account, not only can I see her posts, but I also have access to her account information.
I implore you to conduct random checks on their devices to ensure that are using them in a smart and cautious manner. Surf the internet with your child and allow them to show you their favorite sites that they use. Being open with them promotes healthy internet usage. Another way to help prevent your kids from accessing the malicious websites and being prone to attacks is to limit the time when they can surf the web. Put a time limit on their web browsing or simply try to restrict it after a particular time of day. Allowing them to access the web when you are with them can create positive web habits, such as playing educational games.
Know who is connecting with your children online and set rules for social networking, instant messaging, emailing, online gaming, and using webcams. Continue a dialogue with your children about online safety. We are in an age where computers can fit into our pockets and our children have the world literally at their fingertips. It is scary, but also very exciting and potentially productive. Keep on the lookout for cybersecurity initiatives in your community as there are usually events that are held promoting awareness for parents and to offer help on the newest apps and games kids are currently using. We can never be too safe for our children and using these tips can help ensure that you are aware of the dangers that our kids face.
