Expanding Cybersecurity, Beyond the Basics

We have covered the core four tenets of cybersecurity many times, and by now you may know them by heart:

  • Strong, unique passwords
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Recognizing and avoiding phishing
  • Regularly updating software

These fundamentals are essential, but they mostly apply at the individual level. Organizations need additional safeguards to protect their data, their operations, and their customers. National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is the perfect time to review them.

1. Encrypt Your Sensitive Data

Many hackers want one thing above all else: your data. That makes protecting it a top priority.

Encryption scrambles data into an unreadable state. The only way to read it again is with the matching decryption key. If a hacker gets hold of encrypted data, it has no value to them unless they also steal the key.

Why it matters: Encryption adds a layer of protection that still works if other defenses fail.

2. Back Up Your Data Off-Network

Selling confidential data is only one way hackers make money. Another is ransomware, where a hacker encrypts your data with their own key. You cannot read your files unless you pay a hefty ransom for the decryption key.

Backups are your best defense. If you keep copies of your data outside your network, you can restore from them even if your network is compromised. You never have to negotiate with a criminal to get your business back.

Quick tips:

  • Store backups separately from your main network.
  • Back up on a regular schedule.
  • Test your restores so you know they work before you need them.

3. Use Network Logging

It is always better to stop hackers before they can make a mess of your network. Network logging helps you do that.

Logs record all activity on your network, which gives you a baseline for what normal looks like. With that baseline, it is much easier to spot unusual activity and contain it before it becomes a serious problem.

Why it matters: You cannot catch what you cannot see. Logging turns your network from a black box into something you can monitor.

Putting It All Together

Encryption protects your data from being read. Backups protect you from being held hostage. Logging helps you catch trouble early. Together with the core four, these steps build a stronger, more resilient security posture for your organization.
